Filipinos mark the start of Lent with Ash Wednesday which traditionally includes Catholics having crosses drawn in ash on their foreheads. But to guard against the spread of coronavirus, Catholic Filipinos instead bowed their heads to be sprinkled with ash. Catholic church leaders urged priests to adapt the rite. The Lenten season is “a time of repentance, fasting, and preparation.” Christians are encouraged to give up something such as alms; as well as pray and fast for 40 days.
