The government ordered the country’s top broadcaster to stop operations after its license had expired. The National Telecommunications Commission ordered ABS-CBN Corp. to stop operating after its 25-year congressional franchise ended Monday (May 4). President Rodrigo Duterte’s lawyer, Solicitor General Jose Calida, warned the NTC that they may face graft and corruption charges if they grant the network a provisional authority to operate. Duterte repeatedly vowed to stop ABS-CBN’s operations after the TV network angered the president during the 2016 election campaign. The government petitioned the Supreme Court to revoke the franchise of the broadcaster in February.
